Mpule Kwelagobe, MISS UNIVERSE 1999, is the first delegate ever from her home country of Botswana to enter the Miss Universe pageant...and she won! At the tender age of 19, Mpule captured the attention of the judges in Trinidad and Tobago, the site of the MISS UNIVERSE Pageant, and was crowned MISS UNIVERSE 1999.
Mpule was born the youngest of three children to Justine and Dibeland Kwelagobe in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. In 1997 she moved to Lobatse, in order to attend a special high school for students interested in electronics and science. Her older sister, Bianca, is finishing her studies and her older brother, Serge is a member of the national cycling team.
Mpule is an active athlete; in 1992 she broke the record in the 100 meters and the high jump, and still holds these records back in her hometown. That same year she was named "Best Sports Woman of the Year." For the past five years she has also been active in the Junior Lions Club, working with schools for disabled children. Mpule's hobbies include traveling, reading, and working with the youth of her country.
New York City will be Mpule's new home for the twelve months of her reign. She admits moving half way around the world to a city with a population of the entire country of Botswana is a little overwhelming. Botswana is located at the southern tip of Africa, bordering South Africa. This move marks her first trip to the United States and during her reign she will travel the Globe extensively.
As MISS UNIVERSE, Mpule plans to work on improving AIDS awareness. As an Ambassador for Botswana, she hopes to prove that her brain is just as important as her beauty. After finishing her reign as MISS UNIVERSE, she plans to continue her education in software engineering. She hopes to utilize her degree by working in one of the diamond mines in Botswana creating the newest technology in diamond mining machinery.
