"We are distressed about the recent reports that the Miss Universe organization has put Alicia Machado on notice that she must lose weight in order to retain her title as MISS UNIVERSE. A weight requirement is not part of out titleholder employment contract.

"We are extremely happy with Alicia and feel she fulfills her obligations as MISS UNIVERSE 1996 exceptionally well," said Martin Brooks, president of Miss Universe.

Alicia Machado will be a special guest on the 1996 MISS TEEN USA® Pageant, which will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network on Wednesday, August 21, at 9:00 PM ET from the Pan American Center, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
